The first Domitian coin known from the Greek Iconium
Lot 620
LYCAONIA. Iconium. Domitian, 81-96. Hemiassarion (Bronze, 19 mm, 4.98 g, 2 h). ΔOMITIANOC KAICA[P] Laureate head of Domitian to right. Rev. KΛAYΔЄIKONIЄ[ωN] Nike standing right on globe, holding wreath in her right hand and palm over her left shoulder. RPC II -. Apparently unpublished and unique, a very interesting issue. About very fine.
Starting with Vespasian, Iconium struck two series of coins, one with Greek legends, the other with Latin, thus proving the presence of a Roman colony alongside the native polis. Only two coins in the name of Domitian have come to light so far, both with Latin legends (RPC II 1611 and Leu Web Auction 2, 3 December 2017, 464). The present example with its Greek legends, however, is the first known coin in the name of Domitian from the Greek polis.
